Halloween is almost here. People living near Roanoke, Virginia, who are interested in celebrating the holiday can participate in a diverse range of activities. They can go on a living history walk through a cemetery, visit a haunted house attraction, or take their children trick-or-treating at local businesses.
Here are three Halloween activities for Roanokers to enjoy in 2012. These events offer something for everyone.

Jack-o-Lantern (1)
Ghost Walk

Dates: Oct. 20 and Oct. 23
Time: 6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Admission: Free (donations strongly suggested)
Location: 801 E. Main St. in Salem, Va.

The Salem Museum will sponsor its fifteenth annual Ghost Walk on Saturday, Oct. 20, and again on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The Ghost Walk is billed as a living history tour of East Hill Cemeteries. During this event, tour guides will take visitors on a walk through the grave site. At certain points along the way, actors dressed in period garb will provide information on some of the people buried at East Hill. The tour is free of charge; however, a $6 per person donation is "requested." Tours start at the Salem Museum. They will run every fifteen minutes and will last about an hour. The museum strongly recommends that people interested in the Ghost Walk call ahead to make reservations. Anyone who wants to learn more about the event or who wants to make reservations can contact the Salem Museum by phone at (540) 389-6760 or by email at info@salemmuseum.org.

Fear Factory

Dates: Oct. 18-20 and Oct. 25-27
Time: 7:30 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Admission: $12.00 ($11.00 with canned non-perishable food item)
Location: 3424-B Orange Ave. NE in Roanoke, Va.

The Roanoke Jaycees, a non-profit organization, is hosting a haunted house attraction called Fear Factory. People who want a good fright can pay the $12.00 admission fee and walk through a maze replete with actors in costume performing scary routines. A portion of the proceeds will go to charity. I am a member of the Roanoke Jaycees and volunteered at last year's event. From my vantage point, it appeared that everyone had a great time. People who want more information about the event can visit Fear Factory's website.

Safe Trick-or-Treating

Date: October 31
Time: 2:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Admission: Free
Location: 311 S. Pollard St. in Vinton, Va.

On Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., more than 40 businesses located in downtown Vinton will hand out candy and other goodies to trick or treaters who are 12 years of age or younger.
